J’s Kids Picks Video Blog Reviews

Posted by J 2 November, 2008 (0) Comment

Kids Picks Reviewed- My son J recently turned 5 years old and has seen me working online for as long as he can remember. Ever since he was 3 years old, he would toddle into my home office and pretend to check his emails just like Mommy. About a month ago he told me he wanted to have his own website, so we brainstormed ideas and decided to do video reviews of his favorite toys, books, movies and whatever else he finds interesting. (Which for a 5 year old is quite a lot!) :)

We hope that by sharing his opinions about children’s products, it will help you make decisions about which Christmas presents to buy for kids, which cherished Birthday gifts to choose from or even just to find the latest educational toys for the special pre-school or kindergarten child in your life.

Please bookmark our site below, sign up for our RSS feed to the right and check back often as we will start by updating you on what we think will be the most popular toys for birthdays & special events.

Hasbro Transformers Ultimate Bumblebee

Posted by J 28 November, 2008 (0) Comment

My son loves Bumblebee from the Transformers movie. I have been debating which toy to get him. The Ultimate Bumblebee Transformer is around $100-120 and currently has a rating of 4 out of 5 stars on Amazon. For the ultimate Transformer fan this could be the ticket! Below is a review of the Transformer Toy.

The Ultimate Transformer:

If you ever get hooked on an action movie like the “Transformers”, probably you have wished to have one of the warrior characters such as the ultimate bumblebee. Of course who won’t drool over this amazingly crafted transformer toy? The ultimate bumblebee is incredibly detailed with awesome new designs, evolved from the classic bumblebee action figure. Though it not that much articulated, but the ultimate bumblebee will definitely make a fantastic collector’s item and display piece.
The ultimate bumblebee is one of the largest transformers toys in the market, standing up to more than 14 inches in height when in robot mode. It represents the New Bumblebee Camaro form with fantastic add-on features such as the ability to react with lights, pre-recorded sounds and pre-set moves with just a push of a button. It also boasts Devo’s “Whip It”. Physically, the ultimate bumblebee does not have die-cast parts, which is actually great. It is heavy enough even with the fact that it is all plastic. Though the ultimate bumblebee is made of plastic, its craftsmanship is top notch and is sturdy. The choice for all-plastic composition is brilliant as sometimes the weight of metal parts almost always causes the plastic parts to suffer.
What makes the ultimate bumblebee a real hit is its ability to “come-to-life” and interact using its animatronic movements. This is made possible thru various electronic sensors integrated in it which works by responding to ambient sound and motion. More than these, the ultimate bumblebee showcases its detailed features such as an animated head, arms, and wings. It is also equipped with cannons and missiles. And the coolest feature of the bumblebee is the ability to utter phrases like “Let’s roll out” and “Take that Decepticon”. With all these features, no wonder that the ultimate bumblebee is one of the greatest interactive action figures to date.
Ultimate Bumblebee in Vehicle Mode
The ultimate bumblebee closely represents the fifth-generation concept Camaro. It is sleekly painted with the combinations of black (stripes), silver (gas intake, door handles, tailpipes, wiper, and Chevrolet logo), and gold (Chevrolet logo detail and Autobot emblem). It also has a touch of gray on its grille, windows, and windshield. When the ultimate bumblebee is turned “On”, the alt mode senses the motion of the car while pressing the Autobot insignia activates the sound of the engine starting up and eventually running and revving when in motion.
The ultimate bumblebee really moves and works like a true Camaro with headlights and fog lights lighting up while the engine’s sound changes as the speed is altered. The stopping motion also makes a realistic braking sound. When the ultimate bumblebee is stopped and is idle for awhile, it plays a radio sound, music or honks randomly.
The Transformation into the Ultimate Bumblebee Robot
The robot mode of the ultimate bumblebee is truly awesome! It has accurate individual parts with its head closely resembling to the movie, though it gets a bit too large on the car parts. The paint job is much the same when in vehicle mode, but with the appearance of more gray and silver parts.
Articulation is, however, limited and maybe this is because of its animatronic features. When turned on, it makes an animatronic sound and motion. Moving parts include a rotating head, swinging door wings at random angles, and a full range of movements of the elbows and shoulders. When the battle mode of the ultimate bumblebee is activated via the yellow button on the side of its body, it reacts by making a hydraulic-machine sound and battle noises. Pressing the button will make it aim its cannon arm and fire the missile as well.
With all that being said, if your child (or maybe even your husband :) ) is a transformer nut, the ultimate bumblebee really is a no brainer!

Hasbro Nerf N-Strike Longshot CS-6 Review

Posted by J 25 November, 2008 (0) Comment

Video:

Mommy Review: My husband bought the Nerf Long Shot for my son as a “late birthday” present for my son. I believe he used that as an excuse to get the gun for himself. :) This seems to be a very popular toy for the holidays because the walmart in our town has had a very hard time keeping it in stock. My husband & son have been playing with it for the last 2 days. They both really enjoy playing with it. It can be broken down into two pieces and shoots nerf “bullets”. These don’t hurt when they hit and seem to just bounce off things. Therefore they are allowed to play inside with it. :) I have it on good authority that the bullets travel farther when the gun is broken down into it’s two parts. Probably because there is less friction on the Nerf projectiles. Although my son really enjoys it, I give this a 3 1/2 stars so far( I would give it a 4 for kids over 6yrs old). I may change my mind later when he gets used to handling it, but it really has a lot of moving parts that my 5 year old son has problems with. (Strength and dexterity) I think it is more suited for at least a 6 or 7 year old. I also think my husband was disappointed it didn’t go farther when it had both pieces put together. Overall it is a fun toy for them and they have had many hours of fun with it over the last 2 days. Get the Hasbro Nerf N-Strike Longshot CS-6

J’s Review: B+ Lots of fun with Daddy.

Mommy’s Review: B- Still a little hard to work because it takes a little more strength to use & has a hard time putting bullets in himself. Daddy helps though so they still have fun.

Nerf Long Shot Toy Review

Mommy’s update: It’s January and they still love playing with it. J has gotten better at loading it. I now give the Nerf Long Shot an A- because it has kept their interest for so long. :)

Ant Farm Review

Posted by J 2 November, 2008 (0) Comment

I am reviewing the Discovery Channels:

Discovery Ant Gel Habitat

Mommy’s Comments:

The Discovery Ant Gel Habitat is currently $19.95 at the Discovery Channel Store. We have really enjoyed it. The “Space Gel” Habitat is realy easy to see through, so all the actions the ants make are visible. You can even see their mandibles taking bits out of the gel to make the tunnels. I even found myself watching the ants even when J was not around. Amazing creatures (in a habitat other than the house :) )

We ordered the ants from the suggested website, for $3.95 including shipping. There was supposed to be a free coupon for the Ants but I couldn’t figure it out, maybe you will have better luck. The ants arrived withing 2-3 days and most were still alive. (We ordered during the summer months.) My suggestion is to be ready to move really fast to shake the ants into the habitat. I just held it above the opening and thought they would fall out, but they started to climb around the outside of the container and creap towards my fingers, so I droped the whole tube into the ant farm habitat and had to try at get it out later with tweezers so avoid the trouble by immediatly shaking hard directly into the habitat when the tube is opened.

We have enjoyed the ant farm. The information said the ants would last 6 weeks, but it has been almost 7 weeks and most of the ants are still alive.

Care is easy as you only need to open the top for the ants to get fresh air once a week…that’s it. Easiest pets we have ever owned. :)

J’s Review: B+ J said to give it an A, but I told him we needed to start with a lower score because we would then have room for future reviews.

Mommy’s Review: B+ Great educational Physical Biological Science Toy & worth the money.
